Vibe coding is an AI-assisted software development technique where users describe an app's functionality in natural language to an AI, which then generates the code. Coined by Andrej Karpathy in early 2025, it aims to accelerate development and make app-building more accessible by shifting the focus from writing every line of code to guiding an AI to generate, refine, and debug it.
The practice involves a conversational, iterative process of providing prompts and refining the output, which can be great for rapid prototyping, but raises concerns about developers losing familiarity with the codebase.
